Last night I was waiting in line to be seated in a restaurant. I was bored, so I kinda listened to what the other people around me were talking about. Almost all of the conversation was senseless. Lots of wasted words. I thought to myself…98% of conversations are filler, 2% are content, so most people are speaking Sausage.

Please don’t pull the trigger

I am the mother of 2 grown sons. One married and one that lives at home. Like any other normal parent I like to know what is going on with his life. I know I am limited to only a few questions a day so I have to choose them carefully. After years of experience I have learned to word them cautiously. Never a Yes/No question. For example “Did you eat dinner” as opposed to “What did you eat for dinner”. Sly, huh. Anyway… the other day I was asking my usual round of alloted questions when I asked one too many. ( I see how far I can get before I am cut off). At the final question my son said “Mom,please don’t pull the trigger”. I looked at him (especially because he is in law enforcement. I said what trigger? He said “every conversation has a trigger question. It’s the one that causes a reation” I thought about it and agree that if we do not watch what we say, we usually wind up pulling the trigger.

Stand for something or Fall for everything

When I was younger I used to stand by and let people vent their opinions on life. Sometimes these opionios went totally against what I felt was right. I listened as they said uncalled for things about other nationalities , races countries etc. I am not speaking of terrorism, but of blatant unjustified prejudice. It bothered me to hear these statements, but I sat by quietly because I didn’t want to “ruffle any feathers”. As I got older I got wiser. When something is said that I do not aree with, I will ask the person who said it to defend his statement with facts. I do not care if I do this in a group of people. If you say something derogatory then back it up. I am surprised that in most cases they cannot back up their views. The others that were listening to the conversation and were somewhat in agreement, then have a puzzled look on their face when they realize that they had been agreeing with someone elses insanity. I now stand up for the people that are not there to stand up for themselves rather than fall for some idiots version of the truth.

7th week of camp

I have worked in 4 different offices over the past 20 years. One in NYC’s garment center and the rest in a medical setting. I find that working relationships have their highs and lows just like personal relationships. There is the “new in love ” time, when the worker is learning and enthusiastic. There is the ” I am part of the family time” when the person is totally blended in and does their job with a smile. The there is the “7th week of camp” time. This reverts back to when we were kids and went to day camp or sleep away camp. By the 7th week we all knew each other too well, got on each others nerves and it was time to go home…….

Junior High School revisited

Last week I visited my parents in Florida. They live in a retirement community with people over the age of 65. Each day they all go to the clubhouse (the equivilent of “hanging out” ) and sit and talk. The only problem here, is that they all act like junior high school children. There is the “cool click”. This is made up of the women that are well dressed and still have husbands. There is the “fast crowd”. These are the widows who run all over the place in a pack. There is the DAN crowd. These are the widowers that Drive At Night. They are a hot commodity especially if they still have their teeth. Everyone gossips about the others as far as what they wear, where they go and other nonsense. These people (Bless them) all lived to be 80 years old only to act as if they are in Junior High School again.

Kids are like bank accounts

The other day a friend of mine was saying that her husband was upset with their grown children. He felt that they never call just to talk to him and never ask how he is. When they speak to my friend they tell her about all of the things that are going on in their lives. My friend was always there for her children throughout the years, listening to them and helping them. Although her husband was a good man, he was a bit self centered. I told her that kids were like bank accounts. You must make deposits over the years in order to make withdrawals later down the line. She has a large balance but her husband has no funds to withdraw from. Come to think of it, I guess that statement applies to all of the people in your life.

Everybody loves to look at other people and comment on what they are doing or saying. Especially if you are in an office or school setting. Those places are cut throat. Sometimes the people that have the worst personatilies are the first ones to say nasty things about someone else. That really bothers me. I got to thinking…G-d make our eyes to point outwards. If he made them to look inwards we would all have to take a good look at ourselves. No one would be too thrilled!

Does life get any better

Nowadays everyone is looking for bigger and better. Maybe if we all just took a good look at what we already had we would see that we have a pretty good life already. Would our food taste any better if it was served on a gold plate? Would we have more true friends if we wore a designer handbag?
I may have 3 bathrooms, but I only have one behind. Take a good look around. You already have all you need, you just don’t know it.

First bit of advice

Today I begin my first blog. My children are all grown and now there is no one to give my insightful advice to. As much as people do not want to admit it, some good old fashioned advice is better than all the self help books out there. I always felt that those books are not geared for real life. Anyway, each day I will try to give my views on things that I feel are important. If you have any comments let me know.
